Sitting roughly two miles south of Derby city centre, Normanton is an inner-city suburb and ward of Derby in Derbyshire, England. It borders Littleover, Pear Tree, Rose Hill, and Sunny Hill, and carries one of the longest histories of any part of the city. The ward had a population of 17,071 at the 2011 Census, a figure that represented a 26.4% increase on the previous count, making it one of the fastest-growing and most ethnically varied parts of Derby.
Viking Origins and Medieval Roots
The name Normanton traces back to the Old Norse Normanestune, meaning Norseman’s settlement, which points to a significant Viking presence in this part of the Derby area. The settlement appears twice in the Domesday Book – once in connection with lands held by William the Conqueror, and once for land belonging to Henry de Ferrers, valued at ten shillings. The original village of Normanton-by-Derby occupied what is now the southern part of the suburb, and its main thoroughfare survives as Village Street, which runs past St Giles’ Parish Church. The church sits atop a gentle rise, and its spire is visible across much of the district. Normanton Hall was built for the Dixie family in the 1740s and was later repurposed as a school building during the twentieth century.
Growth, Housing, and Local Government
The northern section of the suburb, known as New Normanton, began to urbanise rapidly from the mid nineteenth century onwards. The area was developed for housing to bridge the gap between the old village and the expanding town of Derby. By the 1930s, Normanton had been absorbed into Derby’s boundaries, and the civil parish was formally abolished on 28 March 1928, with most of it becoming part of Derby and some areas transferring to the adjacent parishes of Littleover and Sinfin Moor. The parish had recorded a population of 1,383 in 1921, and the New Normanton section had already been annexed by the town as early as 1901. Much of the housing stock in New Normanton consists of the Victorian brick terracing typical of that era, while the southern parts include mid-twentieth century housing estates. Normanton is one of seventeen wards in Derby, returning three councillors to Derby City Council. Parts of the area, including Normanton Road and much of New Normanton, fall within the Arboretum ward, while the area around Carlton Road sits within Abbey ward. The ward forms part of the Derby South parliamentary constituency.
