On the north-eastern outskirts of Derby, Oakwood is a modern housing estate built predominantly during the 1980s and 1990s on land formerly known as Chaddesden Common. At the time of its construction, it was considered one of the largest new housing estates in Europe. The estate borders Chaddesden, a suburb that contains one of the largest council housing estates in England, and new houses continue to be added as Oakwood gradually expands.
Green Spaces and Natural Heritage
The name Oakwood traces back to an original oak woodland that once covered the area. That woodland has been preserved as Chaddesden Wood Nature Reserve, maintained by the council and recognised in 1991 as a local nature reserve. It is the only ancient oak woodland within the city of Derby. A nature trail roughly half a mile long runs through the reserve and is open to the public year-round, attracting walkers from across north Derby. In spring, the woodland floor is covered by bluebells. Scattered green spaces, or “green wedges”, have been designed throughout the estate to provide routes for walkers and wildlife. There is also a sizeable park surrounding a modern community centre.
Facilities and Local History
Oakwood has three clusters of shops, the largest of which carries amenities comparable to those found in a large village. The estate also has a leisure centre, originally planned by a private businessman before being taken over and completed by the council. In 2008, the leisure centre was expanded to include a larger gym, and a library opened at the same time. A primary school catering for children aged 3 to 11 serves part of the local community. At Moor Farm, Derby County Football Club operate their football academy, having relocated there from their previous training ground, the RamArena, at Raynesway. On the green area near the roundabout of Oakwood Drive and Bishops Drive, the remains of a small privately owned railway line can still be seen; it is thought to have once run south toward old Chaddesden village and north to the mainline railway beyond the suburb. Oakwood falls within the Oakwood Electoral Ward, one of 18 wards making up Derby City Council, which also encompasses the Durose Country Park estate and part of Chaddesden. The ward is currently represented by three Conservative councillors elected in May 2023.
