Chaddesden Map

Sitting roughly two and a half miles east of Derby city centre, Chaddesden – known locally as Chadd – is one of Derby’s larger residential suburbs, within the ceremonial county of Derbyshire. The A52 road traces its southern boundary, while the wards of Spondon, Oakwood, and Derwent (the Beaufort Street area) border it to the south and west, with Erewash to the north. The Chaddesden Brook runs southwest through Chaddesden Park before meeting the River Derwent.

History and Development

The settlement appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Cedesene”, recorded as a manor held by Henry de Ferrers and valued at three pounds. There is also evidence of Roman activity in the area, with Nottingham Road following the line of a Roman road. For centuries the village centred on Chaddesden Hall and the 14th-century St Mary’s Church, the latter rebuilt around 1357 by Henry Chaddesden, Archdeacon of Leicester. The church is considered a notable example of pre-Perpendicular architecture; its tall chancel dates from the 1350s, while the west tower, with its large door and window, is Perpendicular in style. Restoration of the chancel was completed in 1857 by G. Place. The hall and its estate were sold by the Wilmot family in 1918 and broken up into building plots. Derby Corporation acquired Roe Farm, at the west end of the parish, in 1930, turning it into the corporation’s largest pre-war housing estate. Shopping areas along Nottingham Road and the Wood Road Estate – including Rupert Road and Max Road – followed in the 1930s. Chaddesden was formally absorbed into the County Borough of Derby on 1 April 1968, when its civil parish within Shardlow Rural District was abolished. Derby gained city status in 1977.
